Currently drumming with the soon
to be huge Just Jack, Tony Thompson is
also a well respected and sought after session drummer who
has played with Legendary Manchester Jazz funk band '52nd
street', the Punk band 'Stomp', the 'Clint Boon Experience'
highlighting his ability to leap from one genre to another.
Funk, Punk, Indie, Dance and traditional Hip-Hop are among
the many musical styles he's effortlessly worked with.
52nd
street inked a deal with Tony Wilson's Factory
Records. A surprising move seeing as Factory Records were
not really associated with Funk/Soul. 52nd streets
first release on Factory records in 1982 was "Look
into My Eyes" and received critical acclaim. Towards
the end of 1982 the band started experimenting with electronic
sounds after being influenced by productions from New York
City's hip-hop community and Bill Laswell's work with jazz
keyboardist Herbie Hancock.
A
few bootlegs of another 52nd Street track, a
demo of "Cool as Ice" started to appear in the
United states and within six weeks 52nd Street
secured a major US deal with A & M records and they
helped the song gain a top 20 billboard Dance Chart position.
A & M flew the band to the US to promote the release,
playing live club dates mainly on the east side of the country,
including two nights at the famous Danceteria in New York
City.
After
returning back from America Tony left 52nd Street.
He went on to tour as a session drummer with Gloria
Gaynor and spent several weeks adding his extensive
range of beats to the tracks of hip-hop artist 'Kaleef'
on a tour support slot with Snoop Dogg and Warren G.
Upon meeting the ex Inspiral Carpets keyboardist Clint Boon
in the early 1990's in a bar, Clint told Tony that the Inspiral
Carpets had split, he discussed his intentions of forming
a new band and then a few weeks later the 'Clint
Boon Experience' was born. After a cagey start,
with Clint unsuccessfully meeting with several major labels,
things took off after inking a deal with small indie label
Fierce Panda. After a tour bus accident in Scotland which
hospitalised the band, Tony took a few years out then bounced
back with the Clint Boon Experience and went on to do their
first gig in Manchester a few months later.
Their
first release 'White No Sugar', was enough to draw 400 people
to the show without any advertising. Things were looking
good for Tony and the band. Tony went on to record two albums
with The Clint Boon Experience, The Compact Guide to
Pop Music and Space Travel (1999), and Life in
Transition (2000). In this year the band released the
single Do What You Do (Earworm Song) which featured
Fran Healey, the lead singer of the band Travis.
Tony recently met with Just Jack which
leads us to the present day, and Tony's current work with
Just Jack, an English singer, songwriter, poet, rapper and
producer who made a name for himself with his debut album
"Outer Marker", which received success both in
the US and on English soil. Just Jack has made his long
awaited comeback recently and caused quite a stir in the
music industry and is expected to go on to achieve great
things with his talent shining as brightly as it did two
years ago. After spending weeks on tour with Just Jack,
Tony recently entered the studio to record Just Jack's latest
album 'Overtones' and current single 'Writers block' which
was released on the 9th of October. Tipped by all the right
people, Overtones is an album that transcends genres and
will only further enhance Tony's, and Jack's reputation
in the music industry.
